Mokattam is a range of hills and a suburb in southeastern Cairo,
Egypt. The western side became a space for informal streetbars
arranged by nearby residents. Locally known as a low-key
meeting point for youth where to drink tea (shay) and smoke
shisha, Mokattam is one of the most mesmerizing locations to
glimpse the sun setting on the dusty sky of Cairo.
Following the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, the side
facing the sunset has witnessed gradual and, by now, almost
complete privatization, mainly by construction companies,
leaving no public and accessible breach towards the city’s
horizon.
The progressive privatization of informal spaces as it is
happening, among many others contexts, in Mokattan gave me
a chance to reflect on the landscape and the progressive loss of
intangible heritages.
This ongoing project aims to borrow tools and techniques
of phygital storytelling (AR+geolocation), and processes of
qualitative participated research methods to bridge the
constant changes in urban landscapes and the ethereal
memory of its past.
By inviting the collectivity (initially throughout Meta’s products
and TickTok users) to share their photos, video and audio
memories of the place, the project will function as a virtualgeobased
gallery from which it will still be possible to glimpse
the sun setting on Cairo’s horizon.
